What is Healthy Choices Make Healthy Kids?

AAP Healthy People 2010
Kansas Action for Healthy Kids

The Kansas Chapter of AAP presents: “Healthy Choices Make Healthy Kids”
Authored by Sarah Hampl, MD, FAAP and Monica Pierson, MD, FAAP

This KAAP project involves five pediatricians from across the state who work with their local high school FCCLA chapters (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) to develop a skit for area elementary schoolchildren. This skit is interactive and fun, and is performed at elementary schools and at least 2 other area community organization. These performances include an opportunity for each pediatrician to speak with children, parents, and other community members about childhood obesity, its prevention, and the importance of family involvement.

Each of the 5 pediatricians across Kansas attend training sessions and numerous conference calls with the KAAP Nutrition Committee members to learn more about childhood obesity diagnosis/management and to discuss their roles. Each pediatrician is in contact with their FCCLA chapter advisor and materials, including a pedometer for each FCCLA skit member, are distributed. FCCLA skit members are to evaluate their own habits at the beginning and end of the program. Skits are developed by each group along with finalizing dates for school assemblies and community group performances.

Outcome measures, in addition to numbers of students and adults reached, include step-counting logs and dietary recalls at the beginning and end of the project for the FCCLA high school students. The winning skit will be performed at the KAAP Spring CME meeting. The winning video/DVD will be duplicated and distributed to elementary schools across the state.
